AI R&D Engineer

  • Híbrido (Bélgica)
  • SOFTWARE

The Role:

As a Senior AI R&D Engineer, you will explore novel approaches to AI model and AI architecture design, coordination and deployment strategies, and multi-agent systems and their integration with custom silicon solutions. You will collaborate closely with hardware and software teams to prototype cutting-edge methods, benchmark performance on custom accelerators, and help shape Openchip’s strategic AI roadmap.

Key Responsibilities:

• AI System Research & Innovation: Investigate and develop innovative architectures for AI systems and models and corresponding training and optimization strategies, with a focus on multi-agent coordination and distributed intelligence.

• Hardware/Software Co-design: Collaborate with hardware engineers to co-design AI system components and training & inference strategies, tailoring them to our custom silicon solutions, maximizing performance and efficiency for complex AI system workloads.

• Prototyping & Experimentation: Build proof-of-concept prototypes that validate research hypotheses through rigorous experimentation, using state-of-the-art frameworks.

• Collaboration & Dissemination: Publish/communicate findings both internally and externally. Stay abreast of academic and industry breakthroughs and engage with external partners to identify possible research directions. Mentor junior researchers and engineers, fostering a culture of curiosity, rigor, and continual learning within the R&D group.

Qualifications:

• MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field. A strong publication record is a plus.

• Hands-on experience in researching and developing large-scale AI systems, including experience with designing agent architectures and familiarity with LLMs and related architectures.

More than 7 years of experience in the role or similar proficiency in Python and a strong working knowledge of deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or Hugging Face Transformers. Fluency in additional programming languages (Go, C++, Rust) is a plus.

• Solid understanding of distributed training paradigms (data parallelism, model parallelism, pipeline parallelism), large-scale data handling (sharding, streaming, shuffling) and optimization techniques (pruning, quantization/QAT, knowledge distillation, etc.) – particularly as they relate to distributed agent systems.

• Familiarity with hardware/software co-design principles and methodologies is considered a plus.

• Fluency in English is a must. Knowledge of additional European languages (German, Dutch, Spanish, French, or Italian) is a plus.

Soft Skills:

Intellectual Curiosity & Drive: A demonstrated passion for pushing the boundaries and exploring uncharted territories in complex AI systems, emergent behavior, interactions between agents, and AI hardware/software integration.

• Research Mindset: Proven ability to formulate research questions, design experiments, and interpret results; celebrating both successes and "negative" results that provide new insights.

Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary environment, with the ability to effectively convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
